How to Convert HEIC to JPG (iPhone Photos)
What Is the HEIC Format?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 (2017). Based on the HEVC codec (H.265), it offers significantly better compression than JPG: a HEIC photo weighs approximately 50% less than a JPG of equivalent quality, while also supporting transparency, HDR images, and animated sequences (Live Photos).
Apple chose HEIC to save storage space on iPhones. With 48 MP sensors and ProRAW mode, photo sizes can quickly become a problem. HEIC elegantly solves this challenge by compressing better without sacrificing quality.
The problem? HEIC is not universally compatible. Windows, Android, many websites and applications don't support it natively. Your iPhone HEIC photos simply won't open on many devices and platforms.
Why Convert HEIC to JPG?
Universal compatibility. JPG is supported by 100% of devices, browsers, operating systems and websites. No risk of 'file not recognized' errors.
Easy sharing. Sending a HEIC via email or uploading it to a website can fail silently. JPG works everywhere without issues.
Printing. Photo printing services accept JPG but rarely HEIC. For printing your photos, conversion is often necessary.
Social media. Although most social networks convert automatically, some older platforms or CMS don't handle HEIC.
Photo editing. Many editing software programs (especially older versions) don't support HEIC. JPG is universally editable.

Configure Your iPhone to Avoid HEIC
If you prefer your iPhone to capture directly in JPG:
Settings β Camera β Formats β Most Compatible.
This forces the iPhone to capture in JPG/H.264 instead of HEIC/HEVC. Note: your photos will be approximately 2x larger.
Alternative: automatic transfer. Go to Settings β Photos β Transfer to Mac or PC β Automatic. The iPhone will automatically convert HEIC to JPG during USB cable transfer.
Our recommendation: keep HEIC format on the iPhone to save space, and convert to JPG only when needed with Allplix. Best of both worlds.
HEIC vs JPG: Quality Comparison
At equal file size, HEIC offers higher quality than JPG. Fine details, color gradients, and low-contrast areas are better preserved thanks to the HEVC codec.
When converting HEIC β JPG, there is a slight quality loss since JPG uses an older, less efficient compression. At 90-100% JPG quality, this loss is invisible to the naked eye.
EXIF metadata. The conversion preserves EXIF metadata (date, time, GPS, shooting parameters). Your geolocation information and camera settings are preserved.
HDR and color depth. HEIC supports 10-bit color depth and HDR. JPG is limited to 8 bits. HDR photos converted to JPG lose the extended dynamic range, but remain excellent for everyday use.
